I reviewed this book for my fiancé, not that he isn't a great father - he is an incredible father! But, I know that he, like myself, always wonder if we're doing the right thing, enough.. Don't we all?
Let me preface this review by saying this book, even though titled "Good Dad" is a great read for all parents, step parents, aunts, grandparents, etc.
Jim Daly, President and CEO of Focus on the Family, shares with us personal testimony of how his experiences with three failed father figures in his life has helped shape the father he has become today. His biological father was an alcoholic, his step father deserted him and his foster father accused Jim of trying to kill him. All non-existent in Jim's life by the time he turned 13.
This book is not about being the "perfect" father, but rather trying to become a better one each day. It will remind you that God can help you become a better father despite your childhood or the mistakes you've made. Becoming a better father, or mother, is about building relationships with your child through love, grace, patience and fun while helping them grow into the men and women they are meant to be.
One of my favorite quotes from this book is:
"Fatherhood doesn't resemble being a mechanic: we can't fix things with the turn of a socket wrench. It's much slower work. Subtle work. Sometimes we don't know if what we're doing is even working."

Do your kids HAVE to spend the 50 cents they just found on the sidewalk before going home? Or maybe they want to shut down the party early so they can go spend the $10 they just got for their birthday? Then you may want to read "Smart Money, Smart Kids" and here's why...
This book initially caught my attention and I wanted to review it because I was curious how someone like Rachel Cruze (daughter of the infamous financial guru Dave Ramsey) grew up and was taught about money. How do you teach a child the value of a mere quarter they hold in their hands? To those of us that have been down to just a quarter until payday - trust me when I say, we can tell you the value! But how do you explain this to a child?
About Smart Money Smart Kids
Dave Ramsey and Rachel Cruze teach parents how to raise money-smart kids in a debt-filled world.
In Smart Money Smart Kids, financial expert and best selling author Dave Ramsey and his daughter Rachel Cruze equip parents to teach their children how to win with money. Starting with the basics like working, spending, saving, and giving, and moving into more challenging issues like avoiding debt for life, paying cash for college, and battling discontentment, Dave and Rachel present a no-nonsense, common-sense approach for changing your family tree.
If you've read or heard any of Dave's principles before, then what you hear in this book may be filled with "duh" moments, as in I've heard this before. However, I would encourage you to still read this as it is written directly to parents about how and why to instill financial wisdom in their children. I loved hearing about Dave's financial despairs - I know this sounds wrong, but it reminded me that even one of the world's best financial guru's didn't start out making a million dollars. No, he started from bankruptcy and built his way up financially sound and smart! I also loved how he teamed with his daughter to write this book, as it was different perspective than most of his books. Rachel shares what it was like to be raised with these financial principles and how she is now a financially stable and successful adult.
This book is intended for parents of toddlers to college students. It covers financial principles that will help younger children learn concepts such as Spending, Saving & Giving. It also covers financial principles for older children such as the value of work, paying for college in cash and avoiding debt for life. I wish I had this book for myself when I was younger. I would recommend this book to all parents, but especially those of younger children so that you can start now and help them thru each financial milestone - it's never to early to start learning good money habits!
