The Lumo Project: The Gospel of John #JohnOnNetflix

One of our family's favorite ways to spend time together is to grab a movie and snuggle up on the couch. Even better, when we can sneak in a lesson with the movie. And, three thumbs up when it is a Christian movie or movie that teaches us about the Bible! That's why I was excited when I had the opportunity to view The Gospel of John prior to its release on Netflix!

About The Gospel of John:

The Gospel of John takes the story of Jesus from John's gospel with its own unique characteristics. For John, Jesus is the word of God made human. John is clear that when we encounter Jesus, we encounter God. The gospel writer points to the miracles (the 'Signs') and teachings as evidence of Jesus' special relationship as the divine Son of God.

This full length feature film about the life of Jesus takes the actual Gospel text as its script, word for word, unedited. Five years in the making, this epic production has been critically acclaimed by leading religious scholars as a unique and highly authentic telling of the Jesus story. Narrated by leading British actor David Harewood ("Homeland", "Diamond Blood", "Merchant of Venice") it is based on the latest theological, historical and archeological research. With specifically constructed sets and extraordinary authentic villages and countryside of rural Morocco, it immerses the viewer in the world of first century Palestine.

Check out the trailer below:

About The Lumo Project:

A groundbreaking, multi-language biblical film resource transforming the way we discover, study and engage with the life of Jesus through the four New Testament Gospels: redefining the standard of visual Biblical media. The Lumo Project presents four films - one for each Gospel account - that will revolutionize the way we all experience the story of Jesus and the world of the First Century Palestine in which he lived.

My Thoughts:

I chose the NIV of The Gospel of John. The Lumo Project did an excellent job of sharing the actual Gospel of John. Note I used the word actual. This movie is depicted with a true and unedited representation of the Bible. There are no extravagant storylines or special effects, just a true account of John's gospel.

While I loved how true to the Bible this actually was, I found it hard to keep focus - this could strictly be from my learning style and you may love it, but since this is narrated I felt like I could actually just listen to it and still hear the message. There are actors that beautifully illustrate the scenes, but I feel like this story would have truly reached its full potential if they would have spoken lines versus it being a fully narrated movie. I do believe that the reason they chose to do it this way is because they are able to offer it in 3 versions (NIV, KJV and Spanish). I can't confirm that as I haven't had the chance to speak to anyone with The Lumo Project, but that is my opinion.

This movie is also nearly 3 hours long. If you didn't want to watch the full 3 hours, you can use this movie to supplement a Bible study by selecting the section of the movie that fits the part of John's gospel that you are currently studying. You could also very easily follow along with your Bible, as it is word for word to the version selected.

This movie is a great selection for church studies (think Sunday School) or at home group studies. You and/or your family may even love the movie as it is narrated. In my opinion, I do not think this would be a great fit for younger children, as it would not hold their attention long enough to understand.

I do LOVE the fact that this film was released to Netflix (as of December 1st)! This makes it very convenient to watch from your home TV, laptop or even cell phone!

Overall, this was an excellent movie. You cannot get a movie that is more true to the facts of the Bible than The Lumo Project.

My Thoughts:

Prior to reviewing this DVD, I had only reviewed one other What's In The Bible Movie "Why Do We Call It Christmas?", but none in the actual 13 DVD Bible series. I highly recommend this series for children! I am an avid lover of VeggieTales (the first series created by Phil Vischer), because I think its a great addition to teaching young children outside of Sunday School and family devotions. From what I saw in this video, I will be purchasing the rest of the series!

I love that this movie entertains AND teaches children about the Bible at the same time! It explains concepts that may, under ordinary circumstances, be a little more harder for younger children to grasp, in a way that is fun and rememberable. This DVD is short enough to hold the attention of young ones, although if it were a little longer I'm sure the puppets, animation and catchy songs would do the part also! It stays true to the scripture, so no exaggerated story lines or missing links to the story here. I love also that it includes a "Parent's Guide" for Volume 10 that you can use as a guideline to start a discussion with your child about the DVD and the concepts they heard, what they think, how they understand, etc.
