October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and today I am wearing purple to help raise awareness. Coming from a previous relationship where domestic violence was prevalent, I can speak personally that there is hope, beauty and life beyond what is now. You will find your strength and courage to move on! I now have a beautiful family that I wouldn't give up for the world and its all because I made a choice to step away. If you are in a relationship that involves domestic violence, please know that there is help and people that love you waiting for you to make the choice to leave- but it has to be your choice. Today, I pray for all the families affected by domestic violence. Throw on a purple ribbon and help me raise awareness about domestic violence!

Glen Campbell's: I'll Be Me #MovieReview & #Giveaway

Country music is no stranger to our family. I grew up listening to two types of music - if Mom was in charge of the radio, it was country.. and if Dad was in charge, it was oldies. Even if you aren't the World's #1 Country Music Fan, I'm sure you've heard a song or two by the legendary Glen Campbell.

About Glen Campbell

Most of you may know Glen Campbell, but for those that don't - he is a legend in the world of Country music recognized for his songs "Rhinestone Cowboy", "The Dreams of the Everyday Housewife", "Gentle on My Mind" and "Southern Nights". Or maybe you know him from his short stint with the Beach Boys in 1965?

Aside from his music career, he starred in his own prime time show "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" and co-starred with John Wayne in the movie "True Grit".

In 2011, Glen was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and with the help of his wife and family decided to face the illness head on. He announced publicly about his battle with Alzheimer's and then released his album "Ghost on the Canvas" and began his "Goodbye Tour". On February 12, 2012, Glen performed on the Grammy Awards to an audience of 39 million people and was given the distinguished Lifetime Achievement AWard. AS this music legend enters the final stages of Alzheimer's disease, his family is giving the world a rare glimpse inside his battle with the disease in a new movie, "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me".

About the Movie

"This epic human drama about the undying bond between Glen and his wife, Kim and their unwavering caring for each other, chronicles a story of love, resilience and the power of song. The film features those who know and love Glen, including Bruce Springsteen, Bill Clinton, The Edge, Paul McCartney, Jay Leno, Vince Gill, Jimmy Webb, Blake Shelton, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Steven Martin, Taylor Swift and many others. Rare vintage footage and extraordinary new performances of Glen's most beloved hits immerse this moving cinematic account in the overwhelming talent of this humble family man. With joy and a tireless sense of humor, Glen and his family live each moment in the present while preparing for the future."

Check out the Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me Movie Trailer:

WARNING: You are going to need tissues for this movie!

My Thoughts

As I watched the very beginning of this movie, Glen and his wife are reminiscing watching homemade movies. Glen asks, "Who is that" as she patiently and lovingly explains, "That's you, honey." This gut-wrenching opening is just a small peek into the greatness that this movie endures. This movie will break your heart, have you laughing and still at the same time inspire you.

Aside from being a true documentary into Glen's life, its got to be one of the most amazing stories of devotion and love I've ever seen. The love his wife shoes in a true til' death due us part love, his family's love and devotion as they stand by his side and even perform with him, the love of his crew and many, many fans whom lives he's touched - and will so even more after this film premieres.

This film does an amazing job not only highlighting how Alzheimer's affects the person, but their family. I orginially accepted this review no only because I am a country music lover, but because my Grandmother is in the early stages of memory loss. As nervous as I was to watch, I felt like I wanted an inside look at how this awful disease is in real life. While we are only experiencing the beginning with Grandma, I believe that there is a strength that comes from this story that we can hold on to.

At the end of this film, Glen records a song titled "I'm Not Gonna Miss You". One word: HEART WRENCHING! Might want to make sure the tissues are still nearby. The reality of the words hit me like a ton of bricks:

"I'm still here, but yet I'm gone...

You're the last person I will love,
You're the last face I will recall.
And best of all,
I'm not gonna miss you."

"Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me" premieres this weekend October 24th. It's a movie you won't want to miss!

The Hardest Peace #BookReview & #Giveaway!

Have you ever read a book that just totally enveloped you, as you sat there laughing and crying with the author? This book is just that. For the first time in a while, I find it hard to put into words exactly how this book has touched me. Not because it wasn't a great book, but because there are so many things about this book, about her story and about the author running through my head that I can't get them organized.

This book offers a once in a lifetime chance to truly understand the struggle of finding peace amidst the battle. Kara writes a heartfelt story that captivates you from the "Introduction". The Hardest Peace is encouraging and uplifting. She tells her story through personal testimony, alongside perfectly selected quotes and scriptures.

About the Author

Kara Tippetts and her husband, Jason, have four children and are planting a church in Colorado Springs, CO. Cancer is only part of Kara's story. Her real fight is to truly live while facing a crushing reality. She blogs faithfully over at Mundane Faithfulness and now accomplished author of The Hardest Peace.

My Thoughts

Kara's hopes for this book, in her own words below, were that it would reach and help many, not just those affected by cancer:

"This book is for all of us, because we all face the hard edges of life, whether in marriage, parenting, pain, grief, singleness... brokenness of all shapes and sizes are welcomed to these pages."

We have all faced the hard edges of life. We have witnessed them in our own lives, shared in others and experienced some with the world. This book will give you the encouragement and scriptural reminders that you need to find peace among your hard place. It will give you a new perspective about living in the moment with only a grace that God can give you.

"Cancer is a gift... I can say that cancer and suffering give the beautiful gift of perspective. It is the gift you never wanted, the gift wrapped in confusion and brokenness and heartbreak. It's the gift that strips all your other ideas of living from you completely. The beautiful, ugly raising to the surface of the importance of each and every moment."

I can still remember the day my parents told me that my Mother had cancer. I was young and scared. While my Mom was able to fight the fight and is still to this day a survivor, reading Kara's words add a personal, powerful touch to our family's story. I only wish I had this book available as a teenager trying to find my way thru my mother's battle.

"My season of weakness has taught me the joy of receiving, the strength of brokenness, and the importance of looking for God in each moment."

The Hardest Peace has made me appreciate my family and the life God has given me, everyday! I will no longer be a prisoner to my own fears. Instead, I will live each moment that God gives me with grace and joy and love.

"In every season of our lives, we meet the hard edges of life we never expected. The unexpected pain of life often leaves us only with the choice of how we will endure it. We all have unexpected hard, but how do we face it?"

One Frugal Southern Living reader will WIN a copy of Kara's book, The Hardest Peace. Use the Rafflecopter widget below to find out how to enter and record your entries!
